French as a Second Language in the French Immersion Program. Is French Immersion for my child?
Absolutely! It is designed especially for children who belong to the
linguistic majority group (English) or whose family is other than French
and who aspires to become functionally bilingual.
In Kindergarten, the language of instruction is totally in French,
except when the emotional well-being of the child warrants the use of
English. 75 to 80% of the school day is taught in French.
Extra-curricular activities are in French to support the development of
language skills outside the classroom. Communication between home and
school is in English.
What does research have to say about the advantages of Immersion programs?
Learning a second language has been shown to have a positive impact
on intellectual growth. Cognitive development is enriched and enhanced.
Studies have shown Immersion students to be more flexible
thinkers, with superior listening skills. Abstracts of many such
studies, collected by the CPF (Canadian Parents for French)

What level of fluency can be expected from French-Immersion graduates?
The goal of the Immersion program is to equip the graduate with the
ability to communicate naturally in French using a wide range of
vocabulary. As with any academic endeavour, the interests, efforts, and
abilities of students will affect individual outcomes. A high school
Immersion graduate should be able to function well in a French-speaking
community, accept a job where French is the working language or pursue a
university or college education in French.
